Ready to have your world rocked, Prince fans?
Remember how you shed purple tears when he died, added purple to your Facebook profile pic and heard “Purple Rain” played again and again?
Well, here’s the thing. As much as we associate the color purple with Prince, it wasn’t his favorite color after all, his sister says.
It was orange.

Tyka Nelson dropped that colorful little bombshell in an interview this week with the UK’s Evening Standard to promote the first official exhibition about Prince opening in London in October.
The exhibit will feature hundreds of Prince artifacts that have never been seen outside the star’s Paisley Park estate. Fans will get to see, among other things, the orange Cloud guitar Prince played during his iconic Super Bowl halftime performance.
“The stand out piece for me is his orange Cloud guitar,” Nelson said. “It is strange because people always associate the color purple with Prince, but his favorite color was actually orange.”
Wait, what? What did she say?
“Say it slowly with me now. Prince’s favorite color was orange. Prince’s favorite color was orange. Prince’s favorite color was orange,” writes Andy Cush at Spin. “At some point, it will get easier to hear.”
A lot of folks don’t believe it.
“We refuse to believe that Prince was somehow cheating on purple with orange, and if he was, at least Pantone is wrong about Prince’s purple love, too,” writes Vulture.
Pantone recently created a custom purple color called “Love Symbol #2” to honor Prince’s now-alleged affection for the hue.
Time to rethink that?
Spin took a spin through photos of Prince’s public appearances over the last decade and discovered that, in fact, Prince often wore his affection for the color orange on his sleeve.
Apparently some of just weren’t looking.
We’re (orange) crushed.
