A 32-year-old man from Creighton is in jail after authorities said he robbed a Casey’s General Store at gunpoint on Sept. 15.
The Cass County prosecutor’s office charged the suspect, identified in court documents as Caleb G. Holloway, with first-degree robbery.
Holloway pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Cass County court.
The robbery was reported in the early-morning hours of Sept. 15 at Casey’s General Store, 625 Missouri J in Peculiar.
According to a probable cause statement, a Peculiar police officer went to the convenience store a few minutes before 6 a.m. to investigate the robbery.
An employee at the store described the suspect as a white male wearing a light blue or gray shirt, tan pants, and a red and white Monarchs KC ball cap.
The employee told police that the suspect displayed what appeared to be a handgun in a holster and demanded money at the cash register. The suspect, later identified as Holloway, allegedly took $200 in cash and left the store.
Court records said a witness outside Casey’s saw the suspect’s vehicle and described it as a black vehicle with paint peeling from the hood and roof.
Later that day, Peculiar police shared surveillance images from the store captured during the incident on Facebook in an effort to identity a suspect.
Police said they received a tip Sept. 16 that the suspect could have been Holloway based on photos from his social media page, which matched the witness’s description.
Court records said Peculiar police then learned Holloway was in the custody of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office on unrelated charges after he was arrested on the afternoon of Sept. 15 for an outstanding warrant.
According to online court records, Holloway had an active warrant in Henry County after the prosecutor’s office there charged him in July with possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated, and driving while revoked/suspended.
He pleaded not guilty to those charges on Sept. 19.
Police interviewed Holloway at the Henry County jail on Sept. 17.
The probable cause statement said Holloway agreed to speak with a Peculiar detective and admitted to the robbery at Casey’s during the interview.
After the interview, police went to Holloway’s home in Creighton, where they recovered money taken from the store, a shirt worn by Holloway at the time of the robbery, and the identification of the suspect vehicle.
The first-degree robbery charge was filed Sept. 19 in Cass County.
Holloway remained in the Cass County jail Wednesday with bail set at $50,000.
A review of the case has been scheduled for Nov. 2.
