The International Society of Acrylic Artists’ first Master and Signature Art Exhibition is July 1-Aug. 31 at the Cathy Kline Art Gallery in Parkville.

“It is an incredible presentation of wonderful work. Everyone should make a point to see this first-time event,” Kline said.

Seventy-four pieces of art were selected for the exhibit. Artwork came from the United States, Canada and Malaysia. Local artists who participated included Diane Stolz of Kansas City and Jean Kalin, Platte City.

Show awards were given to Gerald Huber, best of show; Tom Heflin, first place; Jason Sacran, second place; Laara Cassells, third place; Albino Hinojosa, fourth place; Dan Simoneau, fifth place. Honorable mentions went to Tim Ames, Angela Bandurka, Ann Crain and Linda Gunn.

The VIP grand opening will be 5:30-8:30 p.m. July 6, and is open to the public

Two artists will conduct workshops in conjunction with the show.

Michael Young will teach architectural painting and illustrating on July 5; and “Drawing the Figure in Perspective” on July 6. For information contact Young through his website: michaelyoungfineart.com.

Liberty Hospital opens spine and brain center

Liberty Hospital has opened its Advanced Spine & Brain Center and is offering free seminars for those who want to learn more about what the center offers.

Dr. Michael Rhee, a board-eligible neurosurgeon, heads the center and is assisted by nurse practitioner Tracy Wheeler.

“My goal is to educate each patient about what their problem is and to determine if there is a surgery that can help,” said Rhee in a press release. “I want to help patients that suffer from back or neck pain that radiates to the arms and legs. Some patients will find relief through physical therapy, others through pain management, and finally, others only through a surgical procedure.”

Seminars are scheduled for those experiencing symptoms such as neck pain with arm pain; back pain with leg pain; numbness or tingling in extremities; weakness and walking problems.

Seminar dates are June 28 at noon; July 10 at 6 p.m.; and July 24 at 6 p.m. Seminars will be in Room 2 on the ground floor of the Doctors Office Building at Liberty Hospital, 2521 Glenn Hendren Drive, Liberty.

Liberty hosts holiday celebration July 3

Liberty will hold its Independence Day festivities a day early on July 3 at the Fountain Bluff Sports Complex.

The event begins at 6 p.m. and will include family activities, fishing, inflatables, beer garden, food trucks and live music by Lost Wax starting at 8 p.m.

Fireworks begin at 10 p.m.

Celebrators are welcome to bring yard games, chairs, picnics and nonalcoholic drinks.

No open fires or grills, pets, personal fireworks and outside alcohol are permitted.

Liberty4thFest is hosted by the Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce. Sponsorships are available.

Hospital offers a wide range of health seminars

North Kansas City Hospital is hosting a variety of health-related classes and a Health Fair during July.

Managing Your Pain classes will be at 5 p.m. Mondays and 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning July 9. They will be taught by physical therapist Jason Calder. Class fee is $15.

A Living Well With a Chronic Condition seminar will be 1-3:30 p.m. Wednesdays, July 11-Aug. 15.

A bariatric seminar led by Dr. Keenan R. Berghoff will be at 6 p.m. July 12 or July 19.

Off-site classes include: “Veggies & Fiber: Get to the Root” at 6 p.m. July 16 at Zona Rosa in the NKCH Wellness Corner, and “Stay Active & Injury Free: Benefits of Water Exercise” at 6 p.m. July 17 at Zona Rosa.

A Community Health Fair will be 7:30-11 a.m. July 19 at the Gladstone Community Center, 6901 N. Holmes St., Gladstone. Free cholesterol tests and blood pressure, weight and blood sugar checks will be offered with advance registration.

CPR classes are also scheduled at the hospital. “Friends & Family CPR” will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. July 10; “Heart Saver Adult First Aid CPR” will be 8 a.m.-3 p.m. July 14; “Adult/Child/Infant CPR will be 5:30-9:30 p.m. July 17 or July 31. All CPR classes have fees.

Classes for caregivers of elderly adults

Caregivers of older adults are invited to participate in an Aging Mastery Program at Northland Shepherd’s Center beginning July 13.

The 12-week session is designed to offer support to those who are in a caregiver role. Topics include improving health, exercise, advanced planning, financial planning, falls prevention and community engagement.

“This is the first Aging Mastery Program for caregivers that’s going to be offered in the Kansas City area. It would be applicable for anyone who is caring for an older adult loved one,” said Becky Franklin, older adult educator with Tri-County Mental Health. “The Aging Mastery Program is a great playbook of tools and skills to help equip individuals to face older adulthood.”

The classes will be at Northland Shepherd’s Center, 4805 N.E. Antioch Road, #9, Kansas City, North.
